It was so helpful and I had already took my computer into the geek squad with best buy and I still had the problem. The first thing I thought was maybe there was some hardware issue and Windows 8.1 was not recognizing the key press properly. I've seen laptops come from Toshiba with only the Microsoft Generic Display Adapter driver installed.

Finally I then downloaded and installed Windows 8.1 'upgrade' once again, thinking that the problem was solved - but again, when I pressed the brightness key, the screen went dark and Apparently, Windows 8.1 is setting it to very low values. Obviously I couldn't change it to standard display adapter or whatever but I noticed in Device Manager my Monitor said Standard Monitor (Splashtop).
